over the past 7 years I've been learning and using linseed oil paint on my wood creations, including Chairs, spoons, and bowls. I have multiple cans of Broun's, jars of Sage, and now more cans of Heron. With my latest project of painting 10 dining room chairs, I am convinced that Heron is the best product for me. I used Heron purified linseed oil and Linseed oil paint in a 70/30 ratio for my primer coat, Heron Linseed oil paint for my second coat, and applied Waxy wax as my finish layer. What amazing coverage and just the right sheen. I love the way the grain of the wood is still expressed and look forward to the patina in the future.
There is something different about the Broun's linseed oil soap that I find to be touch more enjoyable to use, but I'm not sure what the true difference is. I still use and enjoy the Heron Linseed oil soap.
I have to say, there is one question I have about Heron products. Why so much packing material. I understand that you make a great product, but a box with packing material, inside of another box with packing material, and then a compostable bag around the cans? Love the compostable bag on the can, but the addition of a second box and packing material feels like a high school egg-drop challenge exercise :).
All the best and Love your products. Keep it up.
I use heron for all my finishes. I make custom stain with their paint and oil, I also use the waxy waxy, and their paint. All great stuff and super high quality.
This oil, with no additives, dries faster than hardware store BLO that is loaded with heavy metals.
Heron was the only place near me I could find Sarco glazing compound. It arrived sooner than expected with a lovely note, and the product was fresh and arrived undamaged. It was nice to support a small local business and a great experience overall, and my client was very happy with the results. Thank you!
I bought a Speedheater from Heron for a restoration project and couldn’t be happier. It lifts old finishes cleanly while preserving the original wood — exactly what you want when working on restoration and preservation.
Their linseed oil is exceptional too — rich and nourishing, clearly the highest quality. This oil in combination with the Speedheater has taken a tedious project and turned it into something quite enjoyable. A real plus is that it’s also eco-friendly!
Travis is incredibly knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about traditional craft. It’s not every day a purchase comes with the aid of subject matter expert!! I hope to soon be back to try their paint!
I reached out to Heron Paints a while ago on an epic quest for a very particular project I am working on. Not only did the response come back quickly, but Travis and I had a fantastic one on one chat that guided me through the process. You can't buy that kind of help or care. Thanks for everything! Also I picked up the best gum spirits I've found yet. I appreciate it all!
It's super beautiful, with a very rich color, and also beautiful to work with -- it flows and covers so well. Can't recommend it enough.
I have never used linseed oil paint before and it is much easier than I thought. It goes on easily and the clean up is a breeze with the linseed oil soap. Love that the soap is chemical free and it only takes a small amount to remove any paint. In addition, customer service is fantastic!!! Travis has always responded and given us great advice on how to use the paint. I've badgered him with numerous questions and he is always helpful! Our historic preservation project loves this company and its products!!! Wish we had known about linseed oil paint years ago!
I’ve been using Heron for a couple of years as a sign painter. The quality of the paint is only surpassed by how helpful Travis is in troubleshooting specific problems. He digs deep. And the paint is the best I’ve used until he LSO works.
We have used Heron Linseed Oil paint for two recent state projects and cannot give enough kudos to the service and product. Travis has gone above and beyond with custom paint color mixes and matches and always ships promptly.
Will definitely be using them again for future projects!
I use linseed oil paint on historic preservation projects, and have been very happy with Heron. The quality is great, and the customer service is impeccable. I'm also very excited to have a source of linseed oil paint in the US, which greatly reduces shipping and supply chain issues.
Received "Waste Not, Want Not Red" and it was a rich rust red color. Applied beautifully to my outdoor project. Very pleased with this economical and environmental option!
We’re loving working with Heron Linseed Oil Paint. We are used to working with other natural penetrating oils on raw wood, and we’re so happy to find a paint that is better for the earth, protects the wood better from the inside out, and is easy on our bodies. We really appreciate that you’ve made this a possibility for us. Thanks for all the help as we get to know the in’s and outs of LSOP.
Highly recommend for those looking for a better way to paint and preserve wood in a better way.
We also love Kosti black!!
- Paint arrived quickly and safely- very well packed
- Since I'd never used linseed oil paint before I had many questions- all answered quickly and thoroughly
- Using it to paint new pine windows. Primer (thinned paint) soaked in well and looks good
- Virtually odorless, just linseed oil smell
I have a home that was built in 1910 and I am completely restoring all the double sash windows and I needed the proper paint. I happened to find Heron linseed oil paints in an article on line.
I purchased several products and have used the Heron white linseed oil paint and I have to say that I will definitely order again because this paint is perfect for my needs.
I’m an architect experimenting with bio-based building products to better the environmental impact of my work. I ordered two products:
Hard boiled linseed oil - This is fantastic and cures faster than traditional linseed oil. I used it to restore all the metal hardware in my house to prevent oxidization after rust removal. Came in a durable metal container that felt high quality and seals we’ll.
Linseed oil soap - works exceptionally on all my brushes that vary in bristle material. A little goes a long way and I could see this lasting me for a year based on my use. I do wish the container wasn’t plastic.
I want to highlight how delighted I am to find a domestic US producer of linseed oil products instead of importing from halfway around the world. I plan to order more from Heron and highly recommend this store.
Travis at Heron paint is a wealth of information and a great help in figuring out how to use Linseed oil paint.
I use it for my oil paintings and I’m very Satisfied with the outcome.
The 3/4 glazing knife is great, thank you. But in your order receipt yall made it seem like I was getting two knives, the 3/4 and the 1 1/2”. It was confusing because in the picture you include both knives, even in the physical receipt. It’s ok because I know I only paid for one, and it’s a really nice glazing knife.
On another note, the 3/4” knife is missing one of its brass rivets that encompass the hole in the handle. Not a big deal because it in no way effects the function, I’m just letting yall know. Thanks for the bonus linseed oil!
Yours in glazing perpetuity,
alex
Ack! Bummer! We'll fix the photos on the knife page, Alex. Apologies for the confusion there. Also, we checked the rivets on the other knives, and they all seem to be intact so you got the unicorn! Sorry about that. We'll keep our eyes peeled for rivet-less handles from here on out. Happy glazingpalooza!
Travis has been a great help with my new wood windows finishing project! I really wanted to avoid synthetic paints and my siblings living in Norway and Sweden use linseed oil paint on their homes exclusively, enjoying all the advantages it offers. Heron has great products with the added benefit of being made in the USA.
