The Color Choice Crisis
We understand the frustration — linseed oil paint doesn’t offer the vast range of colors that modern paints do, and that can be limiting when you're trying to match the perfect shade for your project. The reason for this is simple: linseed oil paint is a traditional, hand-crafted product, and creating each color is a labor-intensive process. Also, the main reason linseed oil paint comes in fewer colors is simple: only a limited number of pigments are truly lightfast, weatherfast, and compatible with the oil over time. Pigments are chosen carefully for their durability and long-term performance — and that naturally narrows the palette.
. However, just because the palette is more limited doesn’t mean you have to settle. We believe that your project deserves the perfect color, which is why we offer custom color matching. If you have a color in mind, we’ll work with you to create that exact shade — giving you the unique color you really, really, really want without compromising on quality.

When the palette ends, our craftsmanship begins.
Custom color matching in linseed oil paint demands true craftsmanship. We really understand our paint. Each pigment must be carefully weighed, blended, and tested by hand. Unlike modern synthetic paints, linseed oil paint relies on the mix of individual colored pigments, each with its own weight, texture, and quirky behavior in oil. Pigments in good ole linseed oil behave differently than modern synthetic paints and concentrated dyes. It’s a slow, skilled process — not just mixing, but creating a durable, lasting color from the ground up.
At $150 per color matched, you’re investing in expert craftsmanship, historic materials, and a finish that will stand the test of time.
We actually know what we're doing
Unlike some linseed oil paint manufacturers who rely on private-label production, we take full control of every step of the process. From processing the linseed oil to carefully milling our pigments, we ensure that every batch of paint is crafted with precision and care. We don’t outsource the key steps — we own them. Because of this we know our paint through and through. This enables us to match with pigment nuances in mind. This hands-on approach allows us to be agile, responsive, and focused on crafting the exact color you need. We work closely with you to create custom matches that fit your project’s color scheme.
Hue this works
We prefer to match off of Benjamin Moore color chips, since they offer a consistent and widely available reference. But if you're trying to match an existing color, you’re also welcome to send us a hand-painted sample — especially helpful for historic or site-specific shades.
Once we receive your reference, we’ll review it and let you know if it’s a color we can match using our selection of durable, lightfast pigments. If so, the custom match fee is $150 per color, which covers the formulation and a wet and dry sample for your approval.
The fee is deducted from your order for orders of 7 gallons or more.

SNAFUs and stipulations
We can't match all colors. That's the bottom line. We choose our pigments carefully, and we're forced to avoid some really beautiful pigments that may help make a great match, but simply fall to pieces outside. We always try to get as close as possible, but sometimes it's just impossible with limited lightfast and weather resistant pigments. We'll let you know how we feel about a color, and be up front about the options.
