Traditional Oakum Caulking

Oakum is loosely twisted jute used for caulking, sealing and packing in a variety of industries. Prior to conventional caulking oakum was widely used for filling all sorts of voids, and joints in construction, shipbuilding, and even for horse hoof packing. It’s still used in all of these industries because it creates a flexible gasket between unlike materials, and is a breathable sealant.  This oakum is dry, and can be coated with linseed oil after larger cracks are filled. Typically the oiled oakum is then coated with glazing putty for a watertight patch, and painted with linseed oil paint.

Contains six strands at 27"/ strand. Rougly 1" diameter. Approx. 0.7-0.8 lbs of Oakum.

Made in the USA by Nupak, the leading American manufacturer of Oakum.
